01 / What happened?

The event.

On June 5, 1976, water began leaking through the earth-filled Teton Dam in Idaho. Bulldozer crews moved toward the structure and tried to slow the growing failure.

Eleven people died and downstream communities were devastated by the sudden release of water.

02 / Why did it fail?

The mechanism.

Internal erosion turned growing leaks into an uncontrollable structural breach.

The holes expanded, the flow overwhelmed the intervention, and the dam collapsed. Nearly a million cubic feet of water per second rushed downstream.
